Pillowcase Tutorial by Jane Skoch of Maiden Jane for Remember September

Hello Again!

I asked, Jane Skoch, of Maiden Jane to do a written Tutorial of a YouTube Video by the Missouri Star Quilt Company for the Remember September Project. It is a fun and easy pillowcase to make.

Thanks, Jane, for doing such an amazing job, as always…

Materials:

  • main cotton fabric, 27″
  • contrast cotton fabric, 9″
  • contrast cotton fabric for “piping”, 3″

1. Take full width of main fabric and cut it to 27″ or 3/4 yard.

2. Cut the contrast fabric to 9″.

3. Cut the piping contrast fabric to 2″.

4. Remove selvage.  Lay the fabric pieces on top of each other with the folded side to the left and the selvage on the right. Remove the selvage by cutting through all three fabrics.

5. Press two contrast pieces in half along the length of the fabric.

6. Lay out 9″ contrast fabric, with crease pressed into it face up and open (not folded where you pressed it.)

7. Place main pillowcase fabric (27″) on top of the 9″ contrast – right sides up.

8. Place the 3″ folded piping piece on top of the other two pieces of fabric.  The piping piece should remain folded with raw edges along the top.

9. Roll the main fabric, starting from the bottom, up until you see the 9″ fabric.

10. Take the bottom piece (the 9″ fabric) and fold it up and over the rolled fabric. Pin all three fabrics together. Pin along long edge.

11. Sew along pinned edge using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

12. You now have a tube.  Reach inside and pull on the rolled fabric. Pull completely until the tube is inverted.

13. Fold right sides together and pin.

14. Sew along sides and bottom using 1/4″ seam allowance.  Serge or zig zag the seams.

15. Turn the case inside out and press.

We hope that you will have fun making these pillowcases for our dedicated U.S.  Military!
